Amanda Francis is interested in exploring the efficacy of the art object in society. Traditionally the art object has been a class-bound entity, its appreciation and acquisition determined by intellectual and economic capacity.

Influenced by art operating in a socio-political manner, Francis has become concerned with the idea of a functioning art object. In order to cross these societal boundaries she has turned to utility as a characteristic, which evades ideas of taste and instead addresses individualised needs. As Artnomad, Francis creates articles which function literally and are usually developed from the artists own requirements – the B.I.T, a table designed to add a delicate touch to the rigid authority of London’s street bollards – or W.R.K, a kit used for the occasional tea break. These items will be featured along side others in a brand new catalogue.

Great care has been taken to fashion these objects and, as a consequence, there is always a sense of the ‘hand made’, which prevents Artnomad articles from disappearing into the mundanity of life. Within this exhibition a new product will be launched, Blob, an industrially manufactured rubber ball possessing amazing distortional properties when handled. Blob gives hours of pleasure while functioning as a symbolic object, illustrating the notion that identity is subject to surrounding forces, and therefore always in a state of flux.

Since leaving the Slade School of Fine Art, Amanda has undertaken a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She is currently exhibiting in When in Rome III at the Castlefield Gallery until September 26th 2004. Her work will be featured in textile art survey exhibition, Art Textiles 3 at Bury St Edmunds Gallery Suffolk. Amanda lives and works in London.
